Strengthening Our Economy
“People say we’re in a recession, and they’re right. But if you lose your job, it’s a depression.”
– Larry Phillips
Larry believes elected officials at all levels must do more to help our economy. Under his leadership, King County will be a greater partner in economic development.
As King County Executive, Larry will support:
- Creating jobs by investing in our local infrastructure
- Cutting red tape – and costs – in the county’s permitting and contracting services
- Expanding opportunities for green jobs
- Leveraging federal stimulus dollars to improve our communities and support local businesses
“Larry Phillips has been a great friend of the green entrepreneur. He recognizes that promoting green business, expanding public transit, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions is not just good for the environment. More importantly, it is a cornerstone which we can build a thriving economy around. Businessmen and environmentalists alike are excited about his potential tenure as King County Executive.”
– Greg Rock, Founder of Green Car Company
Protecting the Environment
“The beauty of King County and our great natural resources are only surpassed by the energy and creativity of the people who live here. That gives us hope that we can protect our environment and grow with grace.”
– Larry Phillips
Larry will make protecting and preserving our environment a major focus of his service as King County Executive. His plan includes:
- Promoting urban revitalization and preserving rural lands by maintaining a strong urban growth boundary
- Preserving open space for future generations
- Expanding local solutions to fight global warming and forging partnerships with the federal government as National Co-Chair of Climate Communities
- Identifying opportunities and partnerships to support green buildings, green jobs and electric vehicles
Larry’s strong environmental record has not gone unrecognized. In 2002, 1000 Friends of Washington (now Futurewise) named Larry Elected Official of the Year for “preserving open space and natural resources.”
“Larry Phillips is definitely the environmentalist’s choice for King County Executive. Larry’s record of protecting natural areas, combined with his understanding of global warming, pollution, and salmon habitat issues, will clearly be reflected in his leadership in King County.”
– Michael Kundu, Former Member of the Sierra Club’s Cascade Chapter Executive Committee
Improving Transportation: “The Mobility Revolution”
“Planners tell us another 1.2 million people will come to our Central Puget Sound Region in the next 25 years. We can’t afford to wait to plan and build our transportation – really our mobility – future.”
– Larry Phillips
Larry understands that a well-designed and maintained transportation network is critical to our environment, economy, and quality of life. Larry supports:
- Expanding mass transit service so travelers have more options
- Keeping Sound Transit’s $2.4 billion light rail project on time and on budget as Chair of the Central Link Oversight Committee
- Securing a future bike and rail corridor connecting major Eastside cities from Woodinville to Renton
- Improving efficiency and performance at Metro Transit
“No candidate for King County Executive has a better record on mobility issues than Larry Phillips. Phillips has long been a supporter of light rail and transit as well as a supporter of smart roads and other mobility options in King County.”
– Andrew Smith, founder of Seattle Transit Blog
Securing Public Health and Safety
“The Council is focused on tackling this giant general fund deficit in a way that minimizes the pain for citizens and the cuts to critical services they rely on.”
Larry Phillips, chair of the 2009 Budget Committee
As this recession hits home for the people of King County, it is imperative that vital public services be available to help. Providing a human services safety net is the right thing to do and saves us money in the long run.
Larry is committed to:
- Prioritizing basic services such as sheriff’s deputies, public health programs and bus service
- Emphasizing prevention programs like drug and mental health courts to save money and help people turn their lives around
- Working with the legislature to give the county options to fund public health and human service programs
- Ensuring the county is prepared to respond to public health threats like pandemic flu and other communicable diseases
Food Lifeline recognized Larry for his work on behalf of hungry families in Western Washington with a 2008 Ending Hunger Special Appreciation Award.
