Allow us to tell you why we, as ardent environmentalists, are supporting Larry Phillips as the best environmental candidate for King County Executive. Larry is the candidate who has been – and will continue to be – a champion for the most pressing environmental issues of our time.
Larry gets the big picture. He understands how smart growth and alternative transportation strategies are inherently linked to protecting natural resources, preserving open space, maintaining rural character, and renewing urban cores. He knows the importance of salmon recovery, wastewater treatment, and strategic land use development for improving water quality in our streams, lakes, and Puget Sound. And he sees a future in need of green building, clean energy, and walkable, bikable, transit-oriented communities in order to mitigate the effects of climate change. As our next King County Executive, we know Larry will be an advocate for our environmental priorities and will provide much needed foresight to address 21st century challenges.
Larry Phillips has a track record of vision, leadership, and success that gives us confidence in his ability to deliver for the environment. He was a prime sponsor of Washington’s Growth Management Act and a longtime leader on salmon recovery and protection of Puget Sound. He helped lead the acquisition to protect – forever – 100,000 acres in the Snoqualmie Forest and recently co-sponsored legislation to preserve 7,000 acres of forestland at the head of the Raging River. Last year, Larry was among the first in the region to call for light rail expansion – and then campaigned tirelessly to ensure its passage last November. He has also been on the forefront of finding green solutions to fight climate change. Under his leadership King County became the first government to voluntarily join the Chicago Climate Exchange to reduce carbon emissions and he helped found the national climate change alliance Climate Communities. Larry led the effort to harness greenhouse gas emissions at King County’s Cedar Grove landfill for conversion to renewable energy and he has been an advocate for investment in green collar job training. He even became the first elected official in Washington State to drive a plug-in electric car as a pilot project for clean transportation!
The list of Larry’s environmental accomplishments goes on and on, but with the proven leadership he has shown time and again, we know Larry will lead King County forward. He will work with us to keep King County at the forefront of environmental innovation and protect the resources and values we hold most dear.
Please join us in supporting Larry Phillips as our next King County Executive.
