Young activists form “Young Leaders for Larry”
Group of over 50 strong set out to “rock the vote” for Phillips
A group of young civic activists have founded “Young Leaders for Larry” in support of King County Executive candidate Larry Phillips. We are a coalition of creative and enthusiastic young leaders working within the campaign to improve King County’s future. More than fifty young people have joined the Young Leaders for Larry (YLL) coalition, and more than one hundred young people have signed on as supporters of Larry’s campaign.
“Larry is the only candidate for King County Executive talking about leaving King County better for the future—that’s key for young people because we are the future,” said Chiho Lai, Former King County Young Democrats Chair, age 24.
We support Larry because he strongly believes in the importance of engaging young people in the civic process. When he was 19 years old, and later at 26, he worked for Senator Henry “Scoop” Jackson who allowed him to assist in molding important policy decisions. That value of empowering young, creative energy stuck with him throughout his elected career. Today, Larry continues to employ one of the most youthful and diverse staffs on the King County Council, and has been a champion of the King County Council’s intern program for college students.
“Larry helped me get my start by providing me with valuable learning experience in the civic process. I’m grateful for the opportunity he gave me and other young people to participate in shaping our community,” said Kim Burgess, Director of Development, Children’s Trust Foundation, age 26.
Larry also champions the issues that matter most to us, like the environment, transportation, jobs, and health care. He is currently a National Co-Chair for Climate Communities which secures federal funding to fight climate change locally; is a board member of Sound Transit and worked tirelessly to pass Proposition 1 last fall; and has led the local effort to attract and train our workforce for green collar, family-wage jobs.
“Now more than ever we need a responsible leader to make wise investments for King County that will yield long-term environmental and economic benefits for its citizens. Larry Phillips has a proven track record and the right plan for our future,” said Greg Rock, Founder of The Green Car Company and Link Ventures, age 28.
YLL members meet regularly to strategize over happy hour and attend campaign events in support of Larry. Our next meeting is Friday, June 26 5:00 – 6:00 p.m. at Lake Union BluWater Bistro.
“Last year I told everyone I knew to vote for Obama; this year, I am telling everyone to vote for Larry because he is the change we can believe in for King County,” said Hannah Ahmed, Registered Client Service Associate and Marketing Director for the Arbor Group at UBS Financial Services Inc., age 30.
